Austria’s motorway users are facing an important deadline: the current toll sticker (Vignette) is valid only until January 31, meaning anyone who has not yet purchased the new edition needs to act quickly. From Sunday, February 1, only the new fire‑red Vignette will be accepted on all Austrian motorways and expressways.

The Vignette remains a legal requirement for all cars and motorcycles using these roads. Prices have increased compared to last year: a yearly pass for cars now costs 106.80 euros, while motorcycles pay 42.70 euros.

Digital Vignette on the Rise

The sticker can be purchased at around one hundred ticket machines across the country, as well as at ASFINAG sales partners such as tobacconists, ÖAMTC, and ARBÖ. The digital version continues to grow in popularity—and from 2027 onward, it will be the only option, as Austria phases out the traditional adhesive sticker entirely.

However, motorists buying the digital Vignette online should remember the 18‑day consumer protection waiting period before it becomes valid. This delay does not apply when purchasing directly from ÖAMTC, ARBÖ, or other physical outlets.

Keep Proof of Purchase

Whether digital or adhesive, the purchase confirmation should be kept safe. In cases of a total vehicle loss or a broken windshield, this proof is required to request a replacement Vignette. For those using the adhesive version, ARBÖ expert Sebastian Obrecht reminds drivers that it must be placed on the left side of the windshield or behind the rear‑view mirror. While he advises against cluttering the glass with too many stickers, there is no legal limit as long as visibility remains unobstructed.

Fines for Driving Without a Vignette

Skipping the Vignette can become expensive. The replacement toll fee is 100 euros for single‑track vehicles and 200 euros for multi‑track vehicles. Failure to pay can escalate into an administrative penalty ranging from 300 to 3,000 euros, Obrecht warns.

The newly issued annual Vignette will remain valid until January 31, 2027.
